The modern man’s guide to dressing well every day

It’s that time of the year when most men will need a new suit – whether it’s for a wedding, prom, the summer ball or any other formal occasion. You have probably come across a sharkskin suit and not been too sure exactly what that means. For those of you who haven’t come across one yet, let us just state the obvious – it has nothing to do with sharks! Don’t worry, there’s no need for you to become a suits expert, we’ll answer all the tough questions for you…

Sharkskin is all to do with the fabric used for the suit. Most sharkskin suits are usually made from mohair or wool and sometimes created with acetate or rayon. It’s a smooth fabric with a two-toned woven appearance, it has a soft texture that is very light and wrinkle free making it perfect for a suit. The two toned fabric is usually achieved by basket weaving 2 colour threads– creating a pattern where the darker threads run diagonal to the lighter thread, this is also known as the pick-and-pick twill weave. The combination of these fabrics and the weave is what usually gives the suit that shimmering look making it the perfect formalwear attire.

The sharkskin suit isn’t worn any differently to your other suits – but they are really well suited to wear to a special occassion. Complete your formal look with a simple shirt, tie, pocket square and stylish shoes.
