The modern man’s guide to dressing well every day

Whether you’re heading away or not, for most of us the bank holiday is a time to spend with friends and family. If you are getting ready for a break away from home, we’ve pulled together a guide of what to pack to ensure you keep up appearances over the bank holiday weekend.

A casually smart shirt

Unless you’re going to a wedding, you can leave the formal shirt at home and go for more casual attire. Think a classic Oxford shirt – this will see you through anything from a pub lunch to dinner with friends. Lighten up your winter wardrobe in fresh colours for Spring. Try a vibrant turquoise, pink or even print to liven things up. Alternatively, a khaki shirt will go with anything and is a safe bet.

Lightweight layers

You never can tell which way the weather gage will swing in the UK, especially around this time of year. One week you’re basking in the sunshine, the next it’s all about piling on the woollens. Yes, welcome to dear old Blighty, the land of four seasons in one day. So to prep you for all weathers, pack layers. Start from the bottom up and choose either jeans or chinos teamed with a tee, shirt and lightweight knit. Finally, take a jacket, preferably water resistant, to protect you against the elements.

In your jeans

Unless the dress code dictates otherwise (wedding, smart interview etc..), you really can’t go wrong in a pair of jeans. Go for a darker denim or black jean when you want to look slightly smarter or a salt and pepper or dirty wash for a more casual style. Jeans are a staple that come into their own when you’re off-duty, so choose a pair fit for your Easter break.

Add structure with a blazer

If you’re not sure exactly what you will be doing, add a blazer to your packing list. This will add structure and turn an outfit from casual to smart. Steer away from heavier fabrics and designs that are more suited to formal events, such as the races. Instead, try a lighter blazer in the sense of colour and fabric to take your wardrobe from Winter into Spring.
