Start the new year as you mean to go on, looking smart and sophisticated, thanks to our pick of key wardrobe staples that never date. If you have the right pieces, dressing for any occasion is easy. Here are some steps to a new wardrobe for 2018.

A suit that fits
You may not wear a suit to work or even have a regular occasion when you need to wear one but a suit that fits is a must in every man's wardrobe.
Keep it sharp by ensuring the shoulder pads of the jacket end at the shoulders and it doesn't feel too snug when done up. And make sure the hem hits the top of your shoe.
Stick to classic colours such as grey or dark blue and remember there are no rules when it comes to wearing a suit as separates so why not mix it up a bit?
Durable denim
Not everyone suits skinny jeans. If in doubt, choose a slim or regular fit and go for a darker denim if you want to wear on smarter occasions. To find your perfect fit, take a look at our denim guide.
Faithful outerwear
With milder rainy winters, you may need a slightly lighter option when it comes to outerwear. The trench is a classic that will never date and instantly smarten up your outfit. And when the mercury drops, try a warm parka or a classic wool coat.
Comfy joggers
Easy and versatile, opt for plain coloured joggers in black or grey to wear to the gym, around the house or about town. You may not be able to wear joggers to work but you'll be pleased that you own some on lazy days at home.
Smart blazer
Whether you're wearing jeans or chinos, a blazer is an instant step to smart. Choose one in a classic shade to wear over a shirt on milder days or jumper when the temperatures drop.
Classic chinos
Even if you're not a big fan, chinos can solve a multitude of dilemmas surround smart casual attire. So versatile, you can wear yours with a t-shirt, shirt, jumper or blazer.
An Oxford shirt
Another great all-rounder, the Oxford shirt can be worn casually or smart. You can even layer it over a white t-shirt.
A fine gauge knit
Or lighter knit that you can happily wear to work over a shirt or under your suit jacket. Choose from v-neck, crew or the ever-popular roll neck for an extra layer of warmth or to replace your jacket/blazer.
Plain sweatshirt
Plain doesn't necessarily mean boring. Wear your sweatshirt with black jeans when you head to the match or are out in town at the weekend.
White t-shirt
Talking of which, a white t-shirt that fits well and is free of logos is a versatile piece of kit in any man's wardrobe.
White plimsolls
Not the easiest to keep clean but nothing beats a pair of classic white plimsolls with jeans and plain t-shirt for a clean and contemporary classic look.
